These films provide photographers with new creative opportunities and allow them to experiment with new looks and textures. The revival of discontinued films and the introduction of new film stocks are a testament to the growing demand for film photography. ORWO Wolfen, on the other hand, surprised the world by announcing its first Color C41 film in 50 years, the NC500, and also introducing the NC400 in 35mm. Ilford, after years of success with its Kentmere 100 and 400 films in 35mm, introduced these films in 120 format as well. Kodak also introduced the Kodak Gold 200 in 120 format. CineStill 400D film was introduced in 2022 in both 35mm and 120 medium format. For example, Kodak discontinued its Ektachrome film in 2013, but reintroduced it in late 2017. ![]() In addition to these upstream studies into cellular biology, it may be possible for these switches to be developed into therapeutic strategies. There are indeed potentially vast applications for these switches in the field of biology, ranging from boosting studies into cellular pathways to enabling new technologies in synthetic biology. wrote that they hope that these photosensitive switches could be used in the “remote control of protein localisation, cell death, transcriptional programming, and precise base editing”. This is especially promising given that the shining of light is among the least invasive methods of regulating these changes this strategy could potentially be used in conjunction with existing approaches-like small molecules-to effect more specific intracellular changes. could regulate the interactions between these intrabodies and their targets. By incorporating light-mediated ON- and OFF-switches into intrabodies, He et al. I selected this preprint for its complementary and orthogonal nature with other recent advances 1-2, 4 in modulating the conformations of biological constructs. What I like about this preprint: All at once, everything is different used SolarFLARE to drive gene expression, stimulate downstream cellular effects like necroptosis, and even induce base editing using a photoactivable cytosine base editor. By combining the sunbody with the Fast Light- and Activity-Regulated Expression (FLARE) transcription factor system, 5 the authors created the SolarFLARE platform for light-inducible transcriptional activation. used a similar approach to design “sunbodies”, nanobodies that could be activated by light. Having constructed these moonbodies, He et al. Since the dissociation of these moonbodies could be induced simply by shining light on them, the authors sought to answer two questions: first, could the location of their activation be made specific by shining the light on one region while keeping the rest in the dark, and second, could activation be controlled by turning out the lights? Indeed, the authors even demonstrated spatial and temporal selectivity: by shining light on specific regions, they could target one field over another and, by turning the light on and off, they could modulate the moonbodies’ conformations on a timescale of seconds. Using this approach, the authors also made two further moonbodies that targeted other parts of the cell. eventually made an intrabody construct that dissociated well from the nuclear envelope in the presence of light, which they named the “moonbody”. By varying the position of the LOV2 photoswitch, He et al. This was based on the hypothesis that light would induce changes in LOV2’s shape, allowing the authors to visualise the effect of light on the interaction between these intrabodies and its intended target-a nuclear envelope-in live cells. first designed a moonbody by engineering a photoswitch called LOV2 into live cells. Key findings of preprint: shining in the laser light Moonbodies’ and sunbodies’ responses to light. invented a pair of nanobodies that respond to light in seconds-light switches on the sunbody and switches off the moonbody ( Fig. To improve the intrabodies’ response to light, He et al. 1-4 However, these intrabodies are currently limited in their slow response to these stimuli. ![]() Some of these antibodies found within the cell, known as intrabodies, have been engineered to respond to chemical and light changes. Whether this matters is up to you however, BatchPhoto is designed to be hands-off once you've set it up. Of course, these require some kind of intervention to a greater or lesser extent. Remember, Lightroom has lots of features that allow bulk processing, such as copying and pasting image edits or bulk exporting images. My interest in using BatchPhoto was to see how useful it was in terms of easing my workflow and saving time. Some of these - rotate, crop, contrast, and gamma - come with automatic versions that can apply some logic to their processing. So, what sorts of features does it have? As you'd expect, import, convert, rename, rotate, and resize, but then also folder watch, FTP upload, date stamps, borders, watermarks, crop, contrast, gamma, sharpen, sepia, black and white, and solarize. While XnView is an image viewer that has powerful batch editing and scripting functions, BatchPhoto is built from the ground up to process large quantities of photos and undertake complex, repeatable tasks that can be left to complete unattended. In this sense, Photo Mechanic isn't really a competitor, whereas the freemium XnView ( which I've reviewed before) is. In their own words:ĭo you have repeatable and predictable actions to apply to your massive photo collection? Since 2005 we've been working to make BatchPhoto the best tool for automating those repeatable actions! Enter BatchPhoto, which narrows its focus to one specific area: batch editing. It is blisteringly fast at reviewing photos, allowing you to review, import, and then perform some gross batch editing tasks (such as exporting, renaming, and uploading). Perhaps the most well known (and oldest?) product in this area is Photo Mechanic, with many pros using it to cull and rank images, which is where it really shines. The one area which Adobe hasn't targeted is what I broadly term rapid asset management (RAM), probably because it is a relatively small market of pro photographers who need to quickly process large quantities of images to deliver to a paying customer. ![]() With the world awash with image editors of varying degrees of competency and cost (Serif Affinity Photo,, Corel Paint Shop Pro, and GIMP), Adobe's move to a subscription model caught the DAM market off-guard. Editing functionality was originally more limited (and tended to be global), with pixel-based editors such as Photoshop doing the heavy lifting when needed, round-tripping them back to the DAM when finished. DAMs are epitomized by Adobe's Lightroom and are intended to bulk import photos from a memory card and then provide a way of cataloging them for better photo management. Software to accomplish this generally falls into one of two broad categories: digital asset management (DAM) or image editing. Once you've captured images on your camera, you need to produce some kind of end product from them. Many dictatorial regimes use the economic situation as an integral part of daily politics. ![]() It proposes an analytical framework in which the economic dynamics of a country are portrayed as being a predictor of a dictator’s behavior to either repress or appease the ruling elite and masses to stay in power. This article seeks to contribute to this specific field of study that focuses on the survival strategies of dictators through a political economy approach. The dictator’s first priority is to stay in power.” We do that, assuming that the dictator is rational…Rationality means that the dictator will use his available resources as well as possible to attain his goal(s). “the researcher to look through the dictator’s eyes and to explain the decisions the dictator is making. Most of the literature that covers the relationship between the economic dynamics and a dictator’s survival is based, implicitly or explicitly, on a political economy approach (e.g. In sum, economic dynamics allow leaders to minimize threats to their position in power either through the repression or appeasement of the ruling elite and the masses. In contrast, he may deprive certain groups of such goods in order to repress them. Economic dynamics may also help the dictator to increase the support of the masses, by providing public goods and services. The relationship between this ruling elite and the dictator is often characterized by clientelism and is dependent on co-optation practices through rent-seeking. The economic situation of a state can influence corrupt practices by the dictator that help him create a supportive elite, repress political opposition within this group, and therewith manage potential violence being directed against himself. There are several ways in which a dictator can use the economic dynamics in a country to maintain control. Footnote 2 The connection between dictatorship survival and states’ economic situation is therefore complex and currently remains underexposed within the scholarly debate. Footnote 1 Dictatorships can sustain despite poor economies and there are cases in which dictatorships have stabilized while undergoing economic development. While influential, the relationship between economic development and regime stability is far more complex than initially theorized by Lipset. He argued that the more economically developed a nation is, the greater the chance a regime will develop into a democracy. This relationship is rooted in the modernization theory of Lipset. There is a long-standing practice of analyzing the relationship between economic growth and regime stability. The overarching concept that seems to influence these different strategies is the economic situation of a state. This body of work predominantly concentrates on the role and support of the ruling elite and of the masses. Since it is more likely that international crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes occur in non-democratic regimes, it is not surprising that there is a significant amount of literature that focuses on dictatorial regime survival. While some dictators rule for decades, others fall within a short amount of time. There are great differences in the longevity of dictatorial regimes. It is argued that the economic structure of a country influences the strategy-repression or appeasement-that is chosen to deal with the threat stemming from the masses or the elite and that ultimately, these considerations are likely to influence the economic development of a country. The present research aims to fill this gap through an analysis of Paul Biya’s 37-year reign in Cameroon. However, the intentional use of these strategies to increase regime survival remains under-researched. A dictator can use economic dynamics to increase his support among the elite through corrupt practices, he can determine the extent to which he is supported by the masses by offering public goods and services to them and he can withhold benefits to repress threats stemming from these groups. Scholars predominantly focus on the extent to which a dictator is able to generate support from both the elite and the masses in explaining regime survival. The decisions dictators make and the strategies they use impact the longevity of their regime. Consequently, the decision-making process of dictators has increasingly garnered criminological interest. International crimes, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, are more likely to occur in non-democratic regimes. |
